Memory explained

Why is my Mac using so much memory?

High memory use is not automatically a problem. Modern macOS uses available RAM to keep apps responsive; memory pressure tells you whether that strategy is working.

Used memory is not wasted memory

Apps, cached files, compressed pages, and system services all occupy RAM. Cached data can be released quickly when another app needs space, so a large “used” number by itself is not a reason to clean anything.

Look at pressure, not just percentage

When to investigate

Investigate when pressure stays elevated, the interface stutters, apps reload unexpectedly, or one process grows continuously. A short spike while exporting video, compiling code, or opening a large project may be expected.

Safe first step: save your work, close a finished high-impact app normally, and watch whether pressure returns to green. Avoid “RAM cleaner” actions that promise to make all memory free.

How MemoryPilot helps

MemoryPilot puts pressure, compression, free/reclaimable memory, and top app groups on one dashboard so you can connect the system signal to the likely cause.
